Do you know what the problem with the internet really is? Quite simply it's the information.
You see, where I come from, we have a little thing called fact-checking. This prevents us from looking like retards when we actually go out of our way to quote someone's information.
The problem is that the internet allows people to be anonymous. Look at me, RyanCoke. It's a cute play on my real name; but still, if people don't know me (obviously) I could post whatever canonical nonsense about any topic. And it would be readily available to anyone to read. Now, not to toot my own horn, but I also believe that I am smart enough to start credible rumours. All it would take is to take a semi-fact and place an out of context quote around it. Bingo! Post to digg, reddit or other crap site and then have someone read it once or twice. Upcoming stories are read and the information is disseminated amongst the masses. It doesn't have to be front page news, it just has to enter the reader's mind as an afterthought.
Now we have a problem. The largest marketing tool, information source and playground are now all polluted with mis-information.
And people wonder why I doubt what I read.
